Interested in helping financially? We thank you. As a potential donor, you are probably wondering how your money will be spent. DREAM is run completely by volunteers, so our administrative expenses are very low. The vast majority of our expenses are veterinary, but the below describes our other expenses: Monthly expenses: Heartworm preventative: About $60 / month.
About $5 in postage. That's it. Yes, even our webhosting for this website is donated by friends of the dachshunds. We do not have a facility, so there is no rent or mortgage. We have no staff, so there are no salaries. All dogs are housed in volunteers' homes. Annual expenses:Administration fees (bank, paypal): About $50 annually Department of Agriculture license: $200 annually Taxes: $300 annually
Fundraising ExpensesOur annual picnic, Howl-O-Weenie, is our major fundraising event. The largest expense for Howl-O-Weenie is for our T-shirts. These cost about $2000 to print, generating about $6000 in revenues (so about $4000 profit). Working with the Atlanta City for permits, electricity, trash/recycling services, etc. is about $500. Porto-potty rental is about $400. Hot dogs are donated by Publix, with minimal (about $100) miscellaneous expenses for the overall lunch sales. The homemade desserts are donated by the board and other friends. Hot dog lunches generate about $2500 in revenues. Printing for the Information Sheet and educational materials is about $60. The large (fabulous!) prize baskets for the contest winners are made of donated items that we collect throughout the year. What about the vetting?Yes -- This is where the money goes. Besides the above, all other funds (more than 90%) are spent on veterinary care for the dachshunds, including vaccinations, heartworm tests, spay/neuter surgery, and other medical treatments. Occasionally we contract with a behavioral trainer for abused and neglected doggies with behavioral issues. To give you an idea of ordinary veterinary costs: We work with Village Vets and Lifeline Animal Project to spay/neuter and vaccinate our dogs. Our cost to fully vet a dog with no health issues is about $120, covering vaccinations, spay/neuter, heartworm test, and fecal tests for parasites.
Antibiotics (needed by most shelter dogs): $40 Once in a while we have a dachsie who needs back surgery (IVDD is common in this breed), $2500 - 3500, followed by physical therapy, swim therapy, and, when surgery is not successful, a wheelchair cart. We very often receive dogs who are positive for heartworm, since 90% of dogs not given preventative will contract heartworms, which are spread by Georgia's multitudes of mosquitoes. Heartworm treatments cost about $300. Fiscal responsibility is an important part of our mission and values. Foster homes pay for flea prevention, as well as the food, toys, and
treats, for their foster doggies. You can see that it takes a lot of
friends to help the doggies! Each year we save about 120 dachshunds from death in the shelters. That's about 10 dogs a month, all by volunteers. Think about what that means: finding the dogs, getting to them in rural areas, getting them to the vet, getting them to foster care, working on the adoption, getting them to their new homes. If you have any other questions about DREAM, its mission, and its
commitment to fiscal responsibility, contact us at helpmedream (at) gmail.com. We are
completely open about our finances and would be glad to share our
financial statements with you. You can help by donating any amount. Please consider sponsoring one dog's full vetting: $120 Or, a vaccination package: $85. Or, a heartworm treatment: $300. If you're feeling particularly generous, consider sponsoring a disc surgery for a dog in need: $3000. Whatever amount you give, we will treat your donation with the utmost care and sense of responsibility. Please help us by donating via PayPal or check.
