Why Dachshund Rescue?Ok, so here's the truth - and we don't like it any better than you do. There are too many dachshunds. There are more dachshunds than there are homes. Every time a new dachshund is bred and sold, that's one dachshund that doesn't make it out of the shelter. Believe us, we understand your desire for a brand new, sweet little beautiful dachshund puppy. In fact, if we had it our way, we'd breed puppies ourselves. But we don't, because there are already too many. And we keep rescuing, because of the people who DO breed them. --------------------------------------------- This page contains links to news stories and educational websites that show why poor breeding practices, lax animal spay/neuter requirements, and non-existent or non-enforced animal policies lead to the state of immense animal overpopulation we have today. The truth is, there are just too many dogs -- of all breeds. Please let us know if any of these links have become inactive. http://www.wsmv.com/news/10122086/detail.html http://www.thedachshundnetwork.com/pupmills.htm http://www.stoppuppymills.org/petstorechallenge/ http://www.spotsociety.org/waysmain.htm And, this little blurb from the New York Times: Science Gone Too Far: A December New York Times dispatch reports that among the hottest social status symbols in Tokyo is the cute-but-bizarre dog created by inbreeding, such as a blue Chihuahua or a white dachshund. However, inbreeding also produces a high number of deformities, and to get that dachshund, for example, the litter of five contained four dogs with almost unspeakably gross birth defects. Nonetheless, because of demand, dog inbreeding continues. |
